FOBT jackpots to be capped at £100?

Yesterday was the deadline for the Proposals for Changes to Maximum Stake and Prize Limits for Category B, C and D Gaming Machines and there are rumours that the jackpot on FOBTs may be reduced from £500 to £100.

Financial website This is Money made the claims at the weekend and the LBO sector was quick to respond.

Dirk Vennix of the Association of British Bookmakers said: ‘If stakes and prizes are cut, it would put 2,700 betting shops and 11,000 jobs at risk. We are worried that a knee-jerk reaction, not based on any evidence, would drive people online – where there are no limits on stakes or prizes – or to illegal bookmakers.’

In October 2011 the Government announced the reintroduction of a triennial review system to consider the level of monetary limits on stakes and prizes applied to gaming machines in Great Britain through the Gambling Act 2005.  This will put in place a more coherent and systematic approach to the regulation of stakes and prizes.

The Government is now consulting on a package of measures changing the maximum stake and prize limits for a range of gaming machines situated in arcades, bingo premises, casinos and pubs and clubs in Britain.
