More machines seized in Haringey

Unlicensed gambling machines are not welcome in Haringey. That’s the message from Operation Elgar, an ongoing multi agency operation to remove illegal and unlicensed gambling machines from the borough.

Last month the third Elgar operation brought the tally of confiscated machines to 119 after enforcement officers paid a surprise visit to seven businesses, including social clubs, snooker halls and chicken shops, in West Green Road and Tottenham High Road.

Sixteen illegal or illegally sited machines were confiscated during the visits, including some belonging to the most extreme category which are like roulette machines.

Haringey’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:

“These machines encourage people of all ages to spend impulsively which can result in anti-social behaviour when they suffer big losses. The very illegality of these machines is also of concern: who is supplying them, who takes the profits and who controls them? Haringey Council will continue to work with the police and the Gambling Commission and other partners to remove these from the borough unless used on licensed premises.”

Operation Elgar comprises officers from the Gambling Commission, Metropolitan Police, Haringey Neighbourhood Policing Team, HMRC, Haringey Council Licensing Team and Tactical Enforcement Team.
