New DCMS Chief Miller will have dual role

Cameron’s Cabinet reshuffle sees a relatively uknown face take over from Jeremy Hunt as Culture Secretary – head of the DCMS – the government department responsible for gambling.

Maria Miller was formerly minister for disabled people and she takes over the reins from Hunt who has been promoted to minister of health. She will also become minister for women and equalities and will split her time between the two posts.

The announcement has led to some speculation as to whether the role of the DCMS has been “downgraded” as Miller has been effectively given two jobs.

Don Foster, Lib Dem spokesperson on culture, was quick to voice concerns about the amount of responsibility resting on her shoulders: “She will have to find a way of dealing with the dual responsibility for culture and equalities at a department that may not be big by Whitehall standards, but touches on issues that people care passionately about from sport to libraries.”
