Car ploughs into Westward Ho! arcade

A car dramatically crashed through the window of an amusement arcade in Westward Ho! on Tuesday lunchtime causing an estimated £30,000 worth of damage.

The light blue Rover 75 ploughed through the front foyer of Sunshine Leisure Family Entertainment Centre, situated in Golf Links Road, shortly after midday. A couple in their eighties and a dog were treated on the scene but were unhurt.

Manager Jamie Wiley, 37, confirmed no one was inside the amusement arcade at the time of the incident and said he was ‘relieved’ no one was hurt. A surveyor from Torridge District Council attended the scene to access the stability of the building. It was confirmed the building was structurally safe, although a builder was brought in to board up the premises.

Despite the damage, the adjoining Sunshine Cafeteria is expected to remain open as well as the inside section of the arcade.

Mr Wiley said he estimates the cost of the damage to be in the region of £20,000 to £30,000, with £10,000 worth of damage being caused solely to the arcade machines.
