Canvey Island Carousel gets restaurant makeover

The Essex Echo reports that a former seafront amusement arcade which has been closed for three years is set to reopen as a restaurant. Carousel Diner, next to the bandstand on Canvey seafront, off Eastern Esplanade, will open this weekend.

Residents hope it will help spark a regeneration of the seafront and attract other traders. Ross Gray, from the diner, said: “A lot of people have been saying there are not enough places to eat on the seafront.

“We get day trippers coming down here, who find there is nowhere for them to go when they get hungry.

“It means they are leaving early, then getting something from McDonalds or Kentucky Fried Chicken on their way home.

“Hopefully, this will encourage people to stay on the island for longer.”

The diner will serve a wide variety of food, including steak, chicken, pizza and shepherd’s pie.

Amjad French, 21, of Sylvan Close, Canvey, said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea. “There is not a lot going on with the seafront at the moment and this will attract people down.”

Renee Smith, 80, of Miltsin Avenue, Canvey, added: “I hope it takes off. It should do, because there’s not a lot else down here.”

Another encouraging new feature for the seafront is a 21m by 9m synthetic ice rink planned for Leisure Island Fun Park, in Furtherwick Road.

Mr Gray added: “Hopefully our new business will be good for the seafront. “Anyone going to the cinema or bowling will be able to have their dinner before going in.”
