April’s 10p and 5p launch delayed

The Treasury has announced it will delay the introduction of the new 5 and 10p coins from this April until next January 2012.

The new coins will be made from nickel-plated steel rather than the existing cupro-nickel alloy. HM Treasury conducted a consultation on the changes to the currency and the Impact Assessment can be found on their website www.hm-treasury.gov.uk

In an announcement, the Treasury stated, “You may also like to note that historically, there has been little or no demand for 5p and 10p coins before April each year, and therefore it is unlikely that the new coins will start entering circulation in the first quarter of 2012. If, however, demand does unexpectedly materialize, it will be met by the new, nickel-plated steel coins.”
